Living in Abbotsford
Abbotsford is the most populous municipality in BC outside Metro Vancouver, with about 153,500 people at the 2021 census, and the largest city in the Fraser Valley. It runs from the Fraser River in the north to the Canada–US border in the south, between Langley to the west and Chilliwack to the east, with views of Mount Baker across the border.
The city was formed in 1995 when the District of Abbotsford merged with the District of Matsqui, and much of it remains farmland — the berry industry is on the city's flag. It is home to the University of the Fraser Valley and Abbotsford International Airport, and to Canada's oldest existing Sikh gurdwara, the Gur Sikh Temple, a National Historic Site.
Abbotsford neighbourhoods at a glance
The central areas — Clearbrook, Central Abbotsford and Downtown Abbotsford — hold much of the city's older housing and apartments. West Abbotsford, East Abbotsford and Auguston are largely newer detached and townhome neighbourhoods, with Sumas Mountain on the city's eastern edge. Rural areas such as Matsqui, Bradner and Aberdeen offer acreage and farmland.
Getting around
The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) crosses the city east–west, Highway 11 runs north to Mission and south to the Sumas–Huntingdon border crossing into Washington State, and the Fraser Highway (1A) heads west toward Langley and Surrey. Abbotsford International Airport has scheduled flights and is a common alternative to flying from Vancouver.
