Living in Mission
Mission is a city of 41,519 people (2021 census) on the north bank of the Fraser River in the Fraser Valley, bordered by Abbotsford across the river and Maple Ridge to the west. First incorporated as a district in 1892, it absorbed the separate town of Mission City in 1969.
Unlike most of the Fraser Valley, Mission is mainly forested upland rather than flat floodplain, with benches rising north from the river — which is where its valley and river views come from. The west of the municipality takes in Stave Lake and Hayward Lake, reservoirs of one of BC's earliest hydroelectric projects.
Mission neighbourhoods at a glance
Mission City, the historic core above the river and rail line, has the downtown and most older homes. Cedar Valley and College Heights are where much of the newer detached and townhome housing is, Hatzic sits to the east toward Hatzic Lake, and Silverdale and Stave Falls in the west are more rural.
Getting around
Mission is the eastern terminus of the West Coast Express, the commuter train to downtown Vancouver. The Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) runs west toward Maple Ridge, and the Mission Bridge carries Highway 11 south across the Fraser to Abbotsford and Highway 1. Public schools are run by the Mission School District (SD75).
