A leafy, largely residential central neighbourhood next to the University of Toronto, known for its distinctive late-Victorian "Annex" houses, student population and lively Bloor Street.
Location & boundaries
In Midtown, bounded by Dupont Street to the north, Bloor Street to the south, Bathurst Street to the west and Avenue Road to the east. Yorkville lies to the east and Seaton Village to the west.
History
Developer Simeon Janes created the "Toronto Annex" subdivision in 1886 and the area was annexed to Toronto in 1887. Early residents included Timothy Eaton and George Gooderham, and in the 1960s residents helped stop the proposed Spadina Expressway.
Lifestyle
A walkable, tree-lined area mixing families, University of Toronto students and faculty, with a long-standing intellectual and activist reputation (former residents include Jane Jacobs and Margaret Atwood).
