Neighbourhood guide

Living in Cabbagetown

Cabbagetown is a downtown-east neighbourhood celebrated for having one of North America's largest continuous collections of preserved Victorian houses, mixing restored heritage homes with an eclectic main street.

Location & boundaries

It sits east of downtown, bounded roughly by Parliament, Wellesley and Dundas Streets with the Don Valley forming its eastern edge, next to Riverdale, Rosedale, St. James Town and Regent Park.

History

Irish immigrants settling here in the late 1840s gave the area its name, said to come from the cabbages grown in front gardens; after mid-20th-century decline it was largely restored from the 1970s onward.

Lifestyle

Today it blends heritage character with an independent, artsy and queer-friendly street life along Parliament Street.

Housing & property types

The housing stock is dominated by semi-detached and row Victorian brick homes in Second Empire, Bay-and-Gable and other 19th-century styles.

Shopping & dining

Parliament Street is the commercial heart, with shops, restaurants and a seasonal farmers' market.

Parks & recreation

Riverdale Park West and the free Riverdale Farm offer green space and a working farm on a former zoo site, and the historic Toronto Necropolis cemetery dates to 1850.

Schools

The area is served by the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Getting around

The 506 Carlton streetcar runs through the neighbourhood along Carlton Street and the Parliament Street bus connects north-south, with Castle Frank and College subway stations nearby.

Attractions & landmarks

The Toronto Necropolis and its chapel, Riverdale Farm and the annual Cabbagetown Festival are local draws.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers drawn to heritage Victorian homes and a walkable, characterful neighbourhood at the edge of downtown.

Buying a home in Cabbagetown

In Ontario, most resale house offers go firm quickly in competitive markets, so line up financing and consider a pre-offer inspection. Your lawyer will search title, check for work orders and permits, and confirm the property's zoning.

Budget for Ontario's land transfer tax on top of the price; purchases in the City of Toronto also pay a separate municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on both.
