Neighbourhood guide

Living in Corso Italia

Corso Italia is a St. Clair West shopping district long recognized as one of Toronto's main Italian-Canadian commercial strips, with cafes, bakeries and restaurants alongside a growing Latin American and Portuguese presence.

Location & boundaries

It runs along St. Clair Avenue West between roughly Westmount Avenue and Lansdowne Avenue, forming the eastern part of the historic Earlscourt area, near Oakwood-Vaughan and Regal Heights.

History

British settlers first established Earlscourt in 1906 and the area was annexed by Toronto in 1910; Italian families moved north from College Street's Little Italy through the 1970s, and the strip was designated a Business Improvement Area in 1984.

Lifestyle

The main street keeps a strong Italian character and famously drew hundreds of thousands of celebrating fans after Italy's 1982 World Cup win.

Shopping & dining

St. Clair Avenue West is lined with Italian cafes, gelaterias, bakeries, food markets and restaurants.

Getting around

The 512 St. Clair streetcar runs the length of the strip, connecting to St. Clair West and St. Clair stations on Line 1.

Who it may suit

May suit those wanting a walkable, cafe-lined main street with strong Italian and Latin American food and shopping.

Buying a home in Corso Italia

In Ontario, most resale house offers go firm quickly in competitive markets, so line up financing and consider a pre-offer inspection. Your lawyer will search title, check for work orders and permits, and confirm the property's zoning.

Budget for Ontario's land transfer tax on top of the price; purchases in the City of Toronto also pay a separate municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on both.
