Neighbourhood guide

Living in Casa Loma

Casa Loma is an affluent midtown neighbourhood on the hill above Davenport Road, named for and defined by the landmark Gothic Revival castle at its centre.

Location & boundaries

It is bounded by St. Clair Avenue West to the north, Spadina Road to the east, the CP rail line to the south and Bathurst Street to the west, next to Forest Hill, The Annex and Wychwood Park.

History

The neighbourhood's identity comes from Casa Loma, a castle completed in 1914 for financier Sir Henry Pellatt and handed to the city about a decade later; its prominence drew wealthy residents to the surrounding streets.

Lifestyle

It is a quiet, established residential area set on elevated land overlooking downtown.

Housing & property types

Large period homes on the hillside give the area its affluent character.

Getting around

Dupont station on Line 1 lies just south of the castle, while St. Clair West station and the 512 St. Clair streetcar serve the northern edge.

Attractions & landmarks

Casa Loma castle is a major tourist attraction, and the neighbouring Spadina Museum (Spadina House) and the Baldwin Steps up the escarpment are notable landmarks.

Who it may suit

May suit buyers seeking established, upscale housing on quiet streets close to downtown and a landmark park setting.

Buying a home in Casa Loma

In Ontario, most resale house offers go firm quickly in competitive markets, so line up financing and consider a pre-offer inspection. Your lawyer will search title, check for work orders and permits, and confirm the property's zoning.

Budget for Ontario's land transfer tax on top of the price; purchases in the City of Toronto also pay a separate municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on both.
