A large, established residential neighbourhood east of the Don River, known for its Victorian and Edwardian houses, multicultural commercial streets and big central parks.
East of downtown across the Don Valley, bounded by the Don River to the west, Danforth Avenue and Greektown to the north, Jones Avenue and the rail corridor to the east and the Lake Shore rail lands to the south. Rosedale lies across the valley to the northwest.
The area saw institutional development from the 1870s — the House of Refuge, later Riverdale (Bridgepoint) Hospital, opened at Broadview and Gerrard in 1875 — and was annexed by Toronto in 1884. Its Victorian houses were originally built largely for working-class families.
A family-oriented, walkable area with a strong sense of community, spanning renovated "upper" Riverdale near the Danforth and more original housing in "lower" Riverdale toward the rail lands.
Predominantly Victorian and Edwardian semi-detached and detached houses, with more affordable semis in pockets such as Blake-Jones.
Greektown on the Danforth is known for its Greek restaurants, East Chinatown around Gerrard and Broadview offers Asian shops, and the Riverside district near Queen and Broadview has independent design, food and furniture retailers.
Riverdale Park (with a track, ball diamonds, pool and rink) and the adjacent Riverdale Farm are major draws, along with Withrow Park and Jimmie Simpson Park and community centre.
The Toronto District School Board operates Riverdale Collegiate Institute and several elementary schools such as Withrow, Jackman and Frankland, with Holy Name Catholic School under the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
Line 2 (Bloor–Danforth) stations Broadview, Chester and Pape run along the northern edge, with the 504 King and 505 Dundas streetcars and Pape and Jones buses serving the area.
Landmarks include the Broadview Hotel (an 1890s Romanesque building), Riverdale Farm, the Opera House music venue and the Toronto Chinese Archway on Gerrard.
The Ralph Thornton Community Centre on Queen Street East and local library branches serve residents.
May suit families wanting character homes near large parks and multiple transit options.

Budget for Ontario's land transfer tax on top of the price; purchases in the City of Toronto also pay a separate municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on both.

Generally not right now. Since January 1, 2023, the federal Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act has barred most non-Canadians from buying residential property, with exceptions such as permanent residents and some work-permit holders. The ban has been extended before, so confirm its current status and get legal advice on your situation.
