Living in Parkdale
A dense, mixed-income west-end neighbourhood near the lake, known for its Victorian housing, large rental population, creative community and one of the largest Tibetan communities outside Asia.
Location & boundaries
South of the rail corridor near Queen and Dundas, bounded by Roncesvalles Avenue to the west, Dufferin Street to the east and the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Ontario to the south.
History
Settled in the 1850s, Parkdale incorporated as a village in 1879 and was annexed by Toronto in 1889. Once an affluent area of mansions, it was cut off from its waterfront when the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore works were built in the 1950s, demolishing the Sunnyside Amusement Park.
Lifestyle
A diverse, densely populated and often working-class area that has long been an entry point for newcomers, with an active arts and independent-business scene along Queen Street West.
Housing & property types
A mix of 19th-century Victorian houses (many subdivided into apartments and rooming houses) and mid-century apartment buildings, with a high share of rental housing.
Shopping & dining
