Steveston is a historic fishing village at the southwest tip of Richmond where the Fraser River meets the sea, known for its working waterfront, heritage sites and boardwalk.
Location & boundaries
It occupies the southwest corner of Lulu Island at the mouth of the Fraser's South Arm, reached via No. 1 Road and Steveston Highway. Woodwards and Seafair lie to the north and Ironwood to the northeast.
History
From the late 1800s Steveston was a major salmon-canning centre nicknamed 'Salmonopolis,' home to canneries and a multi-ethnic workforce of First Nations, Chinese, Japanese and European residents until the fishery declined in the 1970s.
Lifestyle
Today it blends a village atmosphere with tourism, a commercial fishing wharf, cafes and year-round events.
