Living in Richmond
Richmond is a city of 209,937 people (2021 census) built on the islands of the Fraser River delta: almost all of Lulu Island, plus Sea Island, home to Vancouver International Airport. The land averages about a metre above sea level, so the city is ringed by dykes, and those dykes double as one of the region's best walking and cycling trail networks.
The delta's rich soil also means Richmond keeps significant farmland alongside its urban core. At the island's southwest tip, Steveston is a historic fishing village with a working harbour and national historic sites including the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Britannia Shipyard.
Richmond neighbourhoods at a glance
The City Centre around Brighouse holds most of Richmond's high-rise condos, close to the Canada Line. West Cambie and East Cambie to the north mix townhomes and houses. Established detached neighbourhoods include Seafair, Quilchena, Broadmoor, Saunders and Mclennan, while Terra Nova, in the northwest, and Steveston offer riverfront living. Hamilton, in the far east, is a smaller, quieter community.
Getting around
The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from Richmond–Brighouse through the City Centre to downtown Vancouver, with a branch to the airport. Highway 99 crosses the city north–south toward the George Massey Tunnel and the US border, and Highway 91 links east toward New Westminster and Delta. Public schools are run by the Richmond School District (SD38).
