Living in Strathcona
Strathcona is Vancouver's oldest residential neighbourhood, a historic working-class and immigrant district on the edge of Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside, known for its colourful heritage houses and community gardens.
Location & boundaries
East of downtown, it is bordered roughly by Gore Avenue and Chinatown to the west, Clark Drive to the east, the Burrard Inlet waterfront to the north and the False Creek Flats to the south. Mount Pleasant lies to the southwest.
History
A community grew here after the Hastings Mill was established in 1865, expanding into housing in the 1880s, especially after Lord Strathcona School opened in 1891. Long known simply as the 'East End,' it was renamed Strathcona after the school by city planners in the 1950s when redevelopment was proposed; for the Coast Salish it had been a seasonal camp called Kumkumalay, meaning 'big-leaf maple trees.'

It remains a close-knit, diverse neighbourhood with a strong community and arts presence.

The area is known for its stock of restored Victorian and Edwardian houses, among the oldest in the city, alongside social housing and newer infill.

Strathcona Park and MacLean Park provide green space, and the neighbourhood is home to one of the city's best-known community gardens.

Lord Strathcona Elementary, one of the city's oldest schools, still serves the area under the Vancouver School Board.
Getting around
There is no SkyTrain station within Strathcona, but it is close to downtown and served by buses along Hastings, Prior and Clark Drive, with Main Street–Science World Station on the Expo Line a short distance to the southwest.

The Strathcona Community Centre and the Ray-Cam Co-operative Centre serve residents.
