Living in Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, known as 'the Drive,' is the lively main street of the Grandview-Woodland area in East Vancouver, long associated with Italian coffee culture and an independent, diverse character. Cafés, produce markets, restaurants and small shops line a walkable streetcar-era strip.
Location & boundaries
The street runs from near the waterfront at Powell Street south through Grandview-Woodland toward the Victoria Diversion near Trout Lake. It lies east of Chinatown and Strathcona, with Hastings-Sunrise to the north and east.
History
Originally called Park Drive, it was renamed Commercial Drive in 1911 and grew as a streetcar shopping street. After the Second World War it became the heart of the city's Italian community, and in 2016 the City formally designated eight blocks as Historic Little Italy; later Portuguese, Latin American and Asian communities added to the mix.
Shopping & dining
The Drive is known for Italian cafés and delis, produce stores, independent restaurants, bars and small shops, with a strong coffee and small-business culture.
Parks & recreation
John Hendry Park (Trout Lake) anchors the south end with its lake, beach, walking trails and the Trout Lake Community Centre.
Getting around
Commercial–Broadway station, at the south end near Broadway, is one of the SkyTrain network's busiest and the only interchange between the Expo and Millennium Lines; frequent buses including the 99 B-Line also serve it.
