Buying a home in Oakville

In Ontario, most resale house offers go firm quickly in competitive markets, so line up financing and consider a pre-offer inspection. Your lawyer will search title, check for work orders and permits, and confirm the property's zoning.

Budget for Ontario's land transfer tax on top of the price; purchases in the City of Toronto also pay a separate municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on both.

Living in Oakville

Oakville is Ontario's largest town, with 213,759 people at the 2021 census, and the seat of Halton Region. It sits on Lake Ontario between Mississauga to the northeast and Burlington to the southwest, with Milton to the northwest, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area.

The town grew from a harbour at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek, and in 1962 merged with the neighbouring villages of Bronte, Palermo and Sheridan. Downtown Oakville and Bronte still centre on their lakeside harbours, while Glen Abbey — home to the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course that has hosted 30 Canadian Opens — and the newer communities north of the QEW add larger family neighbourhoods.

What you can buy in Oakville

Oakville is best known for detached houses on generous lots, including some of the GTA's most sought-after lakefront and waterfront homes and luxury estates. Townhomes are common in the newer northern communities, and condos cluster downtown, in Bronte and along major corridors.

Getting around

GO Transit's Lakeshore West line stops at Oakville GO and Bronte GO stations, and Oakville Transit buses are organized around getting riders to the train. The QEW, Highway 403 and Highway 407 all cross the town. Public schools are run by the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board.
