Living in Maple Ridge
Maple Ridge is a city of about 91,000 people (2021 census, up 10.6% from 2016) in the northeast of Greater Vancouver, between the Fraser River and the Golden Ears peaks. Incorporated in 1874 and a city since 2014, it combines a walkable downtown, newer family subdivisions and genuinely rural acreage within one municipality — which is why it's one of the few places in the region where detached houses, townhomes and land are all widely available.
The outdoors is a big part of the draw. Golden Ears Provincial Park, more than 550 square kilometres of mountains, lakes and trails, sits on the city's northern edge, and Kanaka Creek Regional Park runs through the city down to the Fraser.
Maple Ridge neighbourhoods at a glance
Haney is the downtown core: shops, services, the Haney Place bus exchange and Memorial Peace Park, home to the Saturday farmers market from May to October. Just to the southwest, Port Haney is a riverside heritage district with a West Coast Express station. Hammond, to the west, grew around its sawmill and is known for its small mill-worker cottages.
East of downtown, Albion, Cottonwood and Silver Valley are where much of the city's newer housing has been built, from townhome complexes to detached homes on hillside streets. Further east and north, Thornhill, Whonnock and Webster's Corners are more rural, with larger lots and acreage.
Getting around
The West Coast Express commuter train stops at Maple Meadows and Port Haney stations on its run into downtown Vancouver, and TransLink buses connect through Haney Place. By car, Highway 7 (Lougheed Highway) runs west through Pitt Meadows toward Coquitlam and east to Mission, and the Golden Ears Bridge, opened in 2009, crosses the Fraser to Langley and Highway 1.
Public schools are run by School District 42 (Maple Ridge–Pitt Meadows), shared with neighbouring Pitt Meadows.
