White Rock is a small seaside city of 21,939 people (2021 census) on Semiahmoo Bay, surrounded on its other three sides by Surrey. It separated from Surrey in 1957, and is named for a large white granite boulder on its beach — a glacial erratic that 19th-century sailors used as a landmark.
Life centres on the waterfront: a long beachfront promenade, the pier first built in 1914, and restaurants along Marine Drive. The BNSF rail line to Washington State still runs along the promenade, and Peace Arch Hospital is a major local employer.
White Rock neighbourhoods at a glance
West Beach and East Beach line Marine Drive on either side of the pier, with the most direct ocean views. Uptown, at the top of the hill around Johnston Road, has more of the city's condos along with shops and services.
