Downtown New Westminster is the city's historic commercial and civic heart, rising from the Fraser River waterfront along Columbia Street.
Location & boundaries
It runs along the north bank of the Fraser River by the SkyTrain stations, centred on Columbia Street between roughly Fourth and Eighth Streets. The Quayside waterfront is below it, with Queens Park to the north and Sapperton to the east.
History
As British Columbia's first capital, its Columbia Street corridor of early-20th-century storefronts grew with the arrival of the railway between 1887 and 1892; the waterfront, once lined with terminals and a public market, was redeveloped from the 1980s.
